Held in Berlin, Germany, on 2 October 2021, On Civicness and Participating in Public Life Through Art Practice was Contemporary HUM’s third public panel discussion. The event explored “civicness” and its connection to social responsibility within a global community, from the perspective of three Aotearoa artists actively engaged in public life through their practice.
My contributions
- Assisting in event coordination and logistics planning, including sourcing accommodation for the Contemporary HUM team in Berlin.
- Liaising with guest speakers: Glasgow-based Cat Auburn, Berlin-based Ruth Buchanan and Warsaw-based Daniel Malone.
- Developing communications materials (web banners, social media assets) and promoting the event.
- Organising professional photography to document the event.
- Coordinating the live stream of the event and facilitating a question and answer segment between the online audience and guest speakers.
- Post-event, uploading the artists’ statements and edited transcripts of the discussion to the Contemporary HUM website and promoting that content to the arts community in Aotearoa.
Project impact
Despite challenges related to organising an event during the Covid-19 pandemic in a foreign city, the panel discussion successfully attracted and engaged a range of audience members, provided an in-depth understanding of the featured artists’ practices, and strengthened the international community of Aotearoa artists, forging new connections.
The live stream of the event allowed for greater accessibility for Contemporary HUM’s international audience, and the publication of the artists’ statements and edited transcripts on the website further extended the reach and impact of the discussion.
