Cross Street Carnival

Held on 16 February 2008, and 14 February 2009, the Cross Street Carnival transformed Cross Street in central Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland into a vibrant community celebration. The event was a collaboration between Cross St Studios, an artist-run initiative located on the street, and Fleet FM, a local non-commercial radio station. It aimed to promote the area’s local arts, culture and unique subcultures, providing a platform for local performers, artists and community members to connect and showcase their talents. Both editions of the carnival were free and open to the public, emphasising a non-commercial, alcohol-free and family-friendly atmosphere.

My contributions

My contributions to the Cross Street Carnival included:

  • Co-initiating the idea and co-organising the event.
  • Curating, organising and liaising with stallholders and performing artists
  • Producing communications material and stakeholder reports post-events.
  • Helping to secure sponsorship and develop partnerships with the K’Rd Business Association and others.

Project impact

The Cross Street Carnival successfully promoted local arts, crafts and music, showcasing local makers, performances and entertainers. The event also introduced new visitors to the Karangahape Road area and fostered a strong sense of community and belonging. The 2008 carnival attracted approximately 3000 attendees, and both editions garnered significant media attention, with coverage from TVNZ and Alt TV.
